BostonDynamics new ATLAS, robots are no longer sci-fi..

Probably many of you won’t know Boston Dynamics, a society (now owned by Google) which from years now, designs and develops robot prototypes, inspired by the animal world and not only.

Personally I noticed this society the first time thanks to some of their YouTube video, where they showed the Cheetah, a quadruped robot with a feline reminiscence, capable to run at high speeds.

In the last couple of years although, Boston Dynamics is working on the prototype of a humanoid robot, the Atlas, of which a video, again on YouTube, shows the motor skills.

That first model (in the above picture) was limited to the “supply” factor, as a matter of fact in the video it was shown the robot supported by scaffolding while walking on a tapis roulant, linked with a series of cables which allowed both the control of the prototype and the supply of it.

As of today the new model instead, solved this problem, the new ATLAS, designed for both the indoor and the outdoor utilize, is supplied by batteries and set in motion thanks to an hydraulic system, moreover it mounts body and leg sensors to manage its balance, and in the head to recognize the obstacles.
As you can see in the video below, it can walk without any difficulty. It has to be notice even the stability on a difficult surface to walk on even for the human, as it can be a snow covered terrain.

Forse non tutti conosceranno Boston Dynamics, una società (oggi posseduta da Google) che da anni ormai, progetta e sviluppa prototipi di Robots, prendendo come spunto il mondo animale e non solo.

Personalmente conobbi questa società tramite alcuni video su YouTube dove veniva mostrato il Cheetah, il ghepardo, un robot quadrupede, dalle sembianze feline, capace di correre ad alte velocità.

Da qualche anno però Boston Dynamics sta lavorando al prototipo di un robot umanoide, l'Atlas, di cui un video, sempre su YouTube, ne mostrava le capacità motorie.

Quel primo modello (nella foto sopra) era però limitato dal fattore "alimentazione" infatti si vedeva in quel video che il robot, sostenuto da un'impalcatura mentre camminava su di un tapis roulant, era collegato con una serie di cavi che ne permettevano oltre al controllo anche l'alimentazione.

Oggi il nuovo modello invece, ha risolto questo problema, il nuovo ATLAS, disegnato per l'utilizzo indoor ed outdoor è infatti alimentato a batterie ed attuato idraulicamente, inoltre monta sensori nel body e nelle gambe per gestirne il bilanciamento e nella testa per riconoscere gli ostacoli.
Come potete vedere dal video riportato di sotto riesce a camminare senza alcuna difficoltà. Da notare come sia stabile anche su di una superficie difficile da praticare anche da noi UMANI come può esserlo un terreno ricoperto di neve.
