It was the '60 and Mattel, world leader of toys, presented a product, the ThingMaker, which would allow the kids to create their own toys, filling metal stamps with some liquid plastic.
Today Mattel offers the 2.0 version of that concept, the "next-gen", the new ThingMaker as a matter of fact is a 3D printer that will allow the kids (and adults) to design and create their own toys.
Tramite una App per smartphones e tablets (sia Android che iOS) si potranno quindi disegnare forme totalmente nuove o utilizzare dei preset ed in seguito inviarli alla stampante per il processo di stampa.

Clearly we are not talking about a toy anymore, but of a real 3D printer, and it will require some familiarity to be properly operational, the minimum suggested age for the new ThingMaker is 13 and it presents some safety measures, to avoid that the kids might be harmed, for example the noozle will shrink away when the printer is not working to avoid it to be touched by the more inquiring kids.
Mattel declared that its ThingMaker will work with all the filaments but it didn't announce the price of its sprockets and the available colors, at the same time altough they stated that with a 1Kg plastic srocket it will be possible to create up to 20 figures, 30 trinkets and 100 rings.
Erano gli anni '60 quando Mattel, colosso mondiale dei giocattoli, presentava un prodotto, il ThingMaker che permetteva ai ragazzini di creare i propri giocattoli riempiendo degli stampini in metallo con della plastica liquida.
Oggi Mattel ripropone quello stesso concept ma stavolta possiamo dire in "versione 2.0" o "next-gen", il nuovo ThingMaker si presenta come una stampante 3D che permetterà ai bambini (ed adulti ovviamente) di disegnare e realizzare i propri giocattoli.

Ovviamente, non stiamo parlando di un giocattolo, ma di una vera e propria stampante 3D, e servirà una certa dimistichezza per un corretto funzionamento, l'età minima consigliata per il nuovo ThingMaker è infatti 13anni e la stampante in sè presenta delle features per la sicurezza, al fine di evitare che i bambini possano farsi del male, come ad esempio l'ugello di stampa che si ritrae quando la stampante non è in funzione per far si che i bimbi più curiosi non lo tocchino.
Mattel ha dichiarato che il suo ThingMaker funzionerà con tutti i tipi di filamento ma non ha ancora dichiarato quanto costeranno i suoi rocchetti e le colorazioni disponibili, allo stesso tempo però ha affermato che con un rocchetto da 1Kg di plastica, sarà possibile creare fino a 20 figure, 30 pezzi di bigiotteria o 100 anelli.
