First 1TB M.2 SSD from Toshiba

Toshiba recently announced their new SSD with a M.2 form factor and 1TB capacity..

The new SG5 series mounts the Toshiba NANDs, with TLC (Triple-Level-Cell) technology with capacity up to 1024GB and SATA 3 interface, meaning up to 6 Gbit/s. This new consumer series will be available in both the M.2 and the classic 2.5 inches sizes, with capacities of 128GB, 256GB and 512 GB, moreover we will have a new error correction technology developed by Toshiba, QSBC (Quadruple Swing-By-Code) which assures its performances.

The M.2 SSDs will come in two variants, the “single-sided” and the “double-sided” relative to the population of the NANDs on one side or both sides of the PCB.

The SG5 series has a sequential reading speed up to 545 MB/s, and write speed up to 388 MB/s, with a mean time to failure (MTTF) of 1.500.000 hours

There are still no details about the price or the availability, but here’s the data sheet.

La nuova linea SG5 monta le NAND proprietarie Toshiba con tecnologia TLC (Triple-Level-Cell) con capienza fino a 1,024GB ed interfaccia SATA 3 ovvero 6 Gbit/s.Questa nuova linea consumer sarà disponibile in entrambi i formati M.2 ed il classico 2.5 pollici, con capacità da 128GB, 256GB e 512GB, inoltre avranno una tecnologia di correzione erori proprietaria Toshiba, QSBC (Quadruple Swing-By Code) che ne assicura le performance.

Gli SSD in formato M.2 arriveranno con un due varianti, "single-sided" e "double-sided" relative alla popolazione delle NAND su un solo lato o entrambi i lati del PCB.

La serie SG5 ha una velocità di lettura sequenziale fino a 545 MB/s, e velocità di scrittura fino a 388 MB / s, e un tempo medio al fallimento (MTTF) di 1.500.000 ore.

Hard Drive Reliability Ratings 2015

BackBlaze, American company which works in the field of cloud storage and backups, crowned HGST, former HDD division of Hitachi and now in the hands of Western Digital, as best HDD manufacturer for 2015.

This conclusion has been drawn by the data that the company released on its own website regarding the reliability in the drivers that they use.

BackBlaze utilizes only consumer options, the same solutions that many of us buy, with the only difference that they use exorbitant amounts, during 2015 only the firm declared to have used a total of 56.224 HDDs.

This first table takes into account the models and the brands used by BackBlaze in their tests:

It is to be said that during a whole year it may happen that some products may be discontinued, and they reported their data on those products as well:

In the end here’s a chart about the reliability rate of the various products, this last graph although has to be considered with the due precautions, since it takes into account the failure rate of the various HDDs even considering the number of HHDs used:

A dirlo sono i dati che la società ha rilasciato sul proprio sito, a riguaro dell'affidabilità riscontrata nei driver che loro stessi utilizzano.

BackBlaze utilizza solo soluzioni consumer, quindi le stesse soluzione che acquistiamo tutti noi, con la differenza però che ne usano in quantità esorbitanti, solo nel 2015 l'azienda ha dichiarato di aver utilizzato un totale di ben 56,224 HDD.

VAIO, Toshiba, and Fujitsu merged into one BIG PC COMPANY

The news just show up today on Bloomberg and concerns three giants of the Japanese PC market and not only.
VAIO, PC brand bound to SONY, Toshiba and Fujitsu should be merging in a single giant of the world PC market, the result would see the birth of a new rival for Lenovo NEC, at the moment first Japanese PC manufacturer.
Hidemi Moue, CEO of Japan Industrial Partners (which owns VAIO) declared that the deal should be officially closed within the end of March.
LThis news comes at the same time in which Toshiba confirmed that it has no intention to pull back from the PC market, the same Toshiba that, last December, has been forced to cut on 7.800 jobs after an accounting scandal and the difficulties of one of its electronics divisions, hinting that they already were looking for partners in the Japanese PC production.

We still don’t know what kind of deal could come out from these companies but, considering that in the last few years the podium of the PC manufacturers has been dominated by HP, Lenovo and DELL, leaving to the smaller companies not much to work with, a merging like this one will surely lead to a fiercer competition.

La notizia è apparsa stamattina su Bloomberg, e vede protagonisti tre giganti del mercato PC giapponese e non solo.
VAIO, brand PC legato alla SONY,  Toshiba e Fujitsu starabbero per fondersi in un unico colosso del mercato PC mondiale, il risultato vedrà quindi la nascita di un rivale importante per Lenovo NEC, attualmente primo produttore di PC in giappone.
Hidemi Moue, amministratore delegato di Japan Industrial Partners (che possiede VAIO) ha dichiarato che l'accordo dovrebbe essere annunciato entro la fine di marzo.
La notizia di questa fusione arriva nello stesso momento in cui Toshiba ha confermato di non avere intenzione di ritirarsi dal produrre PC, la stessa Toshiba che nello scorso dicembre era stata costretta a tagliare 7.800 posti di lavoro a seguito di uno scandalo contabile e di una delle sue divisioni di elettronica in difficoltà, aveva rivelato che stavano riflettendo sull'opzione di "considerare alleanze tra società terze", facendo così intuire cha già allora stava cercando di collaborare con altri produttori di pc giapponesi.

Non sappiamo ancora che tipo di accordo potrà nascere tra VAIO, Toshiba e Fujitsu ma considerando che negli ultimi anni il podio dei produttori di pc è stato dominato da HP, Lenovo e DELL, lasciando ai produttori più piccoli soltanto le "briciole", una fusione come questa porterà sicuramente ad una competizione più agguerrita.
